Pivot Your Business
This time last year I decided I needed some mentoring to put my business into a new direction and to solve some issues I felt I had! Basically I was all over the place. I made baby tops, skirts, rompers, shirts, ladies wear, mens, dresses, dog clothes (phew i'm knackered just thinking about it) I had no firm plan and little focus because I was constantly playing catch-up on sizes and then off in a new tangent as soon as I saw something else I thought might work!
I think I lost my direction!
So I went back to basics, a start up business course to get me back on track, I was feeling mighty uneasy about the whole situation, itchy feet as not sure which direction to go next in. I stumbled on Outset Cornwall though social media and immediately knew this would give me the support to pivot my business (plus it january 2017 so out of season and that was ideal). The business start up was great there were somethings I knew like, I already had the ideas, trading places and some admin, but there was loads AND loads I really needed to sort out.
The assessment was that I was sewing far too much basically, not keeping enough detailed records, I had brand direction and no decent advertising! I'm smiling now as I always said "oh it's because i'm a seamstress NOT a business woman!" I'd gone three or so years with little or no firm plans or strategy (check me out i'm growing up), I think I was just on my own little ship gliding across the water without a paddle until now.
The workshops were fab, really down to earth and each one covered a topic which I needed/recieved support on. I also made a few friends there which was nice, also I was able to give a little support to the others in the class because I have a little knowledge having been in business for a little while I was less apprehensive about the whole situation as others were.
I even managed to keep in contact with my mentor Chris who still bends my ear when there's things I need to sort out (I can hear him already) he means well. But Outset Cornwall gave me building blocks look at what's working and change directions on what didn't work.
Fast forward to December and Outset Cornwall contacted me again and offered me the chance to participate in a photoshoot in my studio with a view to the pictures being used in their advertising, I of course jumped at the chance. It was a fantastic opportunity as I got photos of The littlest studio aka my front room, clothes i've made, rail shots, a chance to chat to some of the other mentors which i'd only ever had email communication with.
I then recieved this advert copy which is now in every cinema around the county! WOW is all I can say! Who would have thought a few workshop classes, one-to-one conversations could have lead to this ? What a fantastic start to 2018, I'm thrilled.
